Sakuradamon Incident

1860 · 19th century

The Sakuradamon Incident was the assassination of Ii Naosuke, chief minister of the Tokugawa shogunate, on 24 March 1860 outside the Sakurada Gate of Edo Castle. The killers, mostly samurai from Mito, opposed his signing of trade treaties with Western powers without imperial approval and his purge of opponents. The killing badly weakened the shogunate.
