Samuel Maharero

1856–1923 · 19th century

Samuel Maharero was paramount chief of the Herero in German South West Africa, succeeding his father Maharero in 1890. Faced with land loss, debt and abuses by settlers, he led the Herero rising of January 1904. After defeat at Waterberg he fled with survivors across the Omaheke desert to Bechuanaland, while the German campaign of extermination killed most of his people. He died in exile.
