Jonker Afrikaner was the leader of the Oorlam Afrikaners, a horse-riding, gun-using community from the Cape frontier. Around 1823 he moved north into central Namibia at the invitation of the Nama to fight the Herero, and by about 1840 settled at Windhoek.
