People / group
Oorlam
The Oorlam were groups of Khoekhoe and mixed descent from the Cape Colony frontier who had adopted horses, firearms, Cape Dutch speech and Christianity. From the late 18th century bands such as the Afrikaners and the Witboois migrated north across the Orange River into Namibia, where their mounted commandos dominated the Nama and raided Herero cattle. They gradually merged with the Nama, whose society they reshaped.
