Khoekhoe

Also known as Khoikhoi

The Khoekhoe, formerly called Khoikhoi, are the indigenous pastoral peoples of south-western Africa, who herded cattle and sheep and spoke click languages. At the Cape they were the first people the Dutch met in 1652, and in the following century wars, smallpox and settler expansion broke up their societies. Their descendants include the Nama of Namibia and many Coloured South Africans, Griqua and Basters.
