Santiago Mariño

1788–1854 · 19th century

Santiago Mariño was a Venezuelan independence leader who in 1813 freed eastern Venezuela from Spanish rule while Simón Bolívar campaigned in the west. He shared power uneasily with Bolívar in the Second Republic, which fell to royalist forces under José Tomás Boves in 1814. He later fought in the wars of independence and was active in Venezuelan politics after 1830.
