Sarajevo
Sarajevo is the principal city of Bosnia, which came under Austro-Hungarian administration in 1878 and was annexed in 1908. On 28 June 1914 the heir to the Habsburg throne, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, was assassinated there by the Bosnian Serb nationalist Gavrilo Princip. Accounts of the Austro-Hungarian Empire identify the assassination as the trigger of the July Crisis and the First World War, which destroyed the empire.
