Sarai
Sarai was the capital of the Golden Horde on the lower Volga, founded by Batu Khan in the 1240s near present-day Astrakhan; a second capital, New Sarai, was built further upstream in the 14th century. Rus' princes travelled there to receive their patents to rule, and it grew into a large trading city with mosques, workshops and merchants' quarters. Timur sacked it in 1395, and the Crimean khan destroyed what remained in 1502.
