Saya San

1876–1931 · 20th century

Saya San was a Burmese former monk and traditional healer who led a peasant rebellion against British rule in 1930–1932. Beginning in the Tharrawaddy district during the depression, the rising drew on grievances over taxes and land and on Buddhist and royal symbolism. It was put down with great force, and Saya San was captured and hanged in 1931.
