Second Messenian War

7th century BCE · 7th century BCE

The Second Messenian War was a revolt of the Messenians against Spartan rule in the seventh century BCE, traditionally led by the hero Aristomenes. Its dates are uncertain. The Spartans eventually crushed the revolt and reduced the Messenians to helots, and the struggle, recalled in the poems of Tyrtaeus, is often linked to the shaping of Sparta's militarised citizen order.
