Second Shō dynasty

1470–1879 · 15th century · Also known as Second Sho dynasty

The Second Shō dynasty ruled the Ryukyu Kingdom from 1470 until Japan annexed it in 1879. It was founded by the royal treasurer Kanemaru, who took the throne as Shō En after the death of Shō Toku. Under his son Shō Shin the kingdom reached its height, and from 1609 the dynasty reigned under the overlordship of Satsuma while continuing to send tribute to China.
