Sergipe

Sergipe is the smallest state of Brazil, on the north-eastern Atlantic coast between Bahia and Alagoas, with its capital at Aracaju. The Portuguese conquered the area from its Indigenous inhabitants in 1590 and developed cattle ranching and sugar there. In the 1630s and 1640s it formed the southern edge of the territory controlled by Dutch Brazil.
