Sergius I of Naples
Sergius I (d. 864) was Duke of Naples from 840 and founder of a hereditary dynasty that ruled the duchy for three centuries. Elected by the citizens, he allied with neighbouring powers against Saracen raiders, and a Neapolitan fleet under his son Caesarius fought at the naval Battle of Ostia in 849. Under his descendants Naples grew increasingly independent of Byzantium.
