Battle of Ostia

849 · 9th century

The Battle of Ostia was fought in 849 off Ostia, the port of Rome, between Muslim raiders from North Africa and an allied fleet from Naples, Amalfi, Gaeta and Sorrento. Assisted by a storm that scattered the raiding fleet, the Christian allies won, and many captives were put to work on the Leonine Wall of Pope Leo IV. The battle was later painted by Raphael's workshop in the Vatican.
