Battle of Othée

1408 · 15th century

The Battle of Othée was fought on 23 September 1408 near Othée, north-west of Liège. John the Fearless of Burgundy, with his brother-in-law William, Count of Hainaut, crushed the citizens of Liège, who had rebelled against their bishop-elect, John of Bavaria. Thousands of Liègeois were killed, the city lost its charters, and the victory is often linked with John's nickname 'the Fearless'.
