Battle of Orsha

1514 · 16th century · Part of the Muscovite–Lithuanian Wars

The Battle of Orsha was fought on 8 September 1514 on the Dnieper near Orsha in modern Belarus. A Polish-Lithuanian army under Hetman Konstanty Ostrogski defeated a larger Muscovite army, shortly after Vasily III had captured Smolensk. The victory was widely celebrated in Europe but did not recover Smolensk, which remained in Muscovite hands.
