Pope Leo IV

d. 855 · 9th century

Leo IV was pope from 847 to 855. Elected after Muslim raiders had sacked the basilica of Saint Peter in 846, he enclosed the Vatican hill with the Leonine Wall, creating the fortified Leonine City, and organised the alliance of southern Italian cities whose fleet defeated another raid at the Battle of Ostia in 849. He also restored churches damaged in the raid.
