Pope Leo IX

1002–1054 · 11th century · Also known as Bruno of Egisheim-Dagsburg

Pope Leo IX, born Bruno of Egisheim-Dagsburg, was bishop of Toul before reigning as pope from 1049 to 1054. He travelled widely to enforce church reform against simony and clerical marriage. He took Benevento under papal rule but was defeated and captured by the Normans at Civitate in 1053, and his legates' quarrel with Constantinople led to the schism of 1054.
