Sergo Ordzhonikidze

1886–1937 · 20th century · Also known as Grigory Ordzhonikidze

Sergo Ordzhonikidze was a Georgian Bolshevik and close ally of Stalin who directed the Soviet conquest of the Caucasus, including the invasion of Georgia in 1921. His harsh treatment of Georgian communists who opposed the Transcaucasian federation sparked the Georgian Affair of 1922. He later ran Soviet heavy industry and died in 1937, officially of heart failure but probably by suicide.
