Shaki, Azerbaijan

Also known as Shaki, Nukha, Sheki

Sheki is a city in northern Azerbaijan on the southern slopes of the Greater Caucasus, long a stop on regional trade routes and a centre of silk production. From the 1740s it was the capital of the Sheki Khanate, whose Palace of the Shaki Khans, decorated with stained glass and wall paintings, survives. Russia annexed the khanate in 1819, and the historic centre is a World Heritage Site.
