Siegfried, Count of Luxembourg

c. 922–998 · 10th century

Siegfried (c. 922–998) was a Lotharingian count regarded as the founder of Luxembourg. In 963 he acquired the rocky promontory of Lucilinburhuc above the Alzette from St Maximin's Abbey at Trier and built a castle there, around which the city of Luxembourg grew. His descendants included the counts of Luxembourg, and his daughter Cunigunde married Emperor Henry II.
