Sierra (Ecuador)
The Sierra is the Andean highland region of Ecuador, formed by two parallel mountain ranges enclosing a series of high basins, with the capital Quito at its northern end. Densely settled before the Inca conquest, it was the centre of the colonial Audiencia of Quito and of large estates worked by indigenous labourers. It has long been the base of Ecuadorian conservatism and the rival of the coast.
