Sindhudurg Fort

1664–1667 · 17th century

Sindhudurg Fort is a sea fort built by Shivaji on the island of Kurte off Malvan on the Konkan coast of Maharashtra between 1664 and 1667. Its walls run for about 4 kilometres around the rocky islet and were intended to counter the Portuguese, the English and the Siddis of Janjira. It became a key base of the Maratha navy and gives its name to the modern Sindhudurg district.
