Spanish–Portuguese War (1776–1777)
The Spanish–Portuguese War of 1776–1777 was fought over the borderlands of the Río de la Plata and southern Brazil. A large Spanish expedition under Pedro de Cevallos took the island of Santa Catarina and the colony of Sacramento in 1777. The First Treaty of San Ildefonso of 1777 gave Sacramento and the Banda Oriental to Spain and returned Santa Catarina to Portugal.
