Stasys Girėnas

1893–1933 · 20th century

Stasys Girėnas was a Lithuanian-American aviator who with Steponas Darius attempted a non-stop flight from New York to Kaunas in the aircraft Lituanica in July 1933. After crossing the Atlantic, the plane crashed near Soldin in Germany on 17 July, killing both men about 650 kilometres short of Kaunas. Their flight became a national legend in Lithuania, commemorated by monuments, a stadium in Kaunas and the ten-litas banknote.
