Statuta Valachorum

1630 · 17th century · Also known as Vlach Statute

The Statuta Valachorum, or Vlach Statute, was a charter issued by Emperor Ferdinand II in 1630 for the Orthodox Vlach and Serb settlers of the Croatian and Slavonian Military Frontier. It confirmed their privileges, including freedom from serfdom, their own elected judges and captains and the right to keep their land in return for military service. It placed them directly under the Habsburg military authorities rather than the Croatian nobility.
