Swarup Singh of Mewar
Swarup Singh was Maharana of Mewar from 1842 to 1861. He tried to restore the state's finances and to curb the power of his nobles, and during the Indian Rebellion of 1857 he remained loyal to the British, sheltering European refugees from Neemuch on the island palace of Jag Mandir in Lake Pichola. His loyalty strengthened Mewar's standing with the British after the rebellion.
