Tana (Azov)
Tana was an Italian trading colony at the mouth of the Don, on the site of modern Azov in southern Russia. Under licence from the khans of the Golden Horde, Venetian and Genoese merchants traded there from the 1330s in grain, furs, fish, slaves and goods from Central Asia. Timur sacked it in 1395, and the Ottomans took it in 1475, renaming it Azak.
