Tang Code

653 · 7th century · Also known as Tang Lü Shuyi

The Tang Code was the comprehensive penal code of the Tang Dynasty, issued with an official commentary, the Tang Lü Shuyi, in 653. It defined crimes and punishments systematically and reflected Confucian principles of hierarchy and family relationships. Accounts of the Tang Dynasty treat it as a cornerstone of Tang governance, and it served as a model for later Chinese dynasties and for legal codes in Japan, Korea and Vietnam.
