Ternopil
Ternopil is a city in western Ukraine on the Seret River, in the historical region of Podolia. It was founded in 1540 as a fortress by the Polish commander Jan Amor Tarnowski and passed to Austria in the partitions of Poland. In November and December 1918, after Lviv was lost to Polish forces, it was briefly the seat of the government of the West Ukrainian People's Republic. It is now the centre of Ternopil Oblast.
