Tetum language

Also known as Tetun

Tetum is an Austronesian language of the island of Timor and, with Portuguese, one of the two official languages of Timor-Leste. Its widely spoken form, Tetun Dili, absorbed many Portuguese loanwords during centuries of colonial rule and served as a lingua franca across the territory. The Catholic Church's use of Tetum during the Indonesian occupation strengthened it as a symbol of East Timorese identity.
