Tewodros II

c. 1818–1868 · 19th century

Tewodros II was Emperor of Ethiopia from 1855 until his death in 1868. Rising from a provincial background, he ended the era of regional fragmentation known as the Zemene Mesafint and sought to centralise and modernise the state. Accounts of the Ethiopian Empire credit his reunification, followed by Menelik II's centralisation, with rebuilding the administrative structure that later enabled the Adwa campaign.
