The Troubles

1968–1998 · 20th century · Also known as Northern Ireland conflict

The Troubles were the conflict in Northern Ireland from the late 1960s to 1998 between mainly Catholic nationalists and republicans seeking a united Ireland and mainly Protestant unionists and loyalists, with the British Army and police also involved. Beginning with clashes over civil rights in 1968–1969, it involved bombing and shooting campaigns by the Provisional IRA and loyalist paramilitaries and killed about 3,600 people. The Good Friday Agreement of 1998 largely ended it.
