Troupes de la Marine
The Troupes de la Marine were independent companies of infantry under the French Ministry of the Marine, raised to defend France's colonies and naval ports. From 1683 they formed the regular garrison of New France, and many of their officers were Canadian-born men skilled in frontier warfare alongside Native allies. They were reorganised in 1761 after the loss of Canada.
