Thomasites

1901 · 20th century

The Thomasites were American teachers sent to the Philippines in the early years of United States rule, named after the transport ship USAT Thomas, which brought over five hundred of them in 1901. They set up a public school system teaching in English and trained Filipino teachers. Their work made English widely spoken in the Philippines.
