Thomson–Urrutia Treaty

1914 · 20th century

The Thomson–Urrutia Treaty was signed in Bogotá in April 1914 by the United States and Colombia to settle the dispute caused by Panama's secession in 1903. Ratified by the US Senate only in 1921, after an expression of regret had been removed, it paid Colombia 25 million dollars and gave it special rights in the canal, and Colombia in turn recognised Panama's independence.
