Tôn Đức Thắng

1888–1980 · 20th century

Tôn Đức Thắng was a Vietnamese communist revolutionary who succeeded Ho Chi Minh as president of North Vietnam in 1969 and became the first president of the reunified Socialist Republic of Vietnam in 1976, holding office until his death. A former mechanic and labour organiser, he spent some sixteen years in French prisons, mostly on Poulo Condore, before 1945; the presidency under him was largely ceremonial.
