Tongzhou District

Also known as Tongzhou, Beijing

Tongzhou District is a district of Beijing, east of the city centre at the northern end of the Grand Canal, where grain shipped from the south was unloaded for the capital. From 1935 it was the seat of the Japanese-backed East Hebei Autonomous Government, and in July 1937 a mutiny of that government's Chinese troops there killed many Japanese and Korean residents. It is now the seat of Beijing's municipal administration.
