Tanggu Truce

1933 · 20th century

The Tanggu Truce was the ceasefire signed at Tanggu, near Tianjin, on 31 May 1933 between China and Japan after Japanese forces had pushed south of the Great Wall. It created a demilitarised zone in north-eastern Hebei and in effect accepted Japan's control of Manchuria and Rehe. The zone became a base for further Japanese pressure, including the East Hebei Autonomous Government.
