Great Wall of China
The Great Wall of China is a system of fortifications built across northern China over many centuries to defend agrarian states against steppe peoples. Its best-known surviving sections in brick and stone were built or rebuilt under the Ming Empire as part of its northern frontier defence. The wall's limits as a barrier became clear when the Manchus passed through it and founded the Qing Empire.
