Treaty of Altranstädt (1706)

1706 · 18th century · Part of the Great Northern War

The Treaty of Altranstädt of 24 September 1706, made near Leipzig during the Great Northern War, ended Saxon participation in the war after Charles XII of Sweden invaded Saxony. Augustus the Strong renounced the Polish crown in favour of Stanisław Leszczyński, broke his alliance with Russia and handed over the Livonian Johann Patkul, whom the Swedes executed. The Swedish army wintered in Saxony at the country's expense.
