Treaty of Fort Stanwix (1784)
The Treaty of Fort Stanwix of 1784 was signed on 22 October 1784 at Fort Stanwix, New York, between the United States and representatives of the Six Nations after the American Revolution. American commissioners, holding hostages, forced the Iroquois to give up claims to lands in western New York and Pennsylvania and to the Ohio Country. The confederacy council later rejected it, but it opened the way for large land cessions.
