Urbarial Patent of 1767

1767 · 18th century · Also known as Theresian Urbarium

The Urbarial Patent of 1767 was a decree of Maria Theresa that regulated the obligations of serfs to their lords in the Kingdom of Hungary. Issued after the Hungarian diet failed to act and peasant unrest grew, it fixed the size of peasant holdings and limited labour services, dues and payments in kind according to the land held. It remained the basis of relations between lords and peasants in Hungary until serfdom was abolished in 1848.
