Uzun-Haji

c. 1848–1920 · 19th century · Also known as Uzun-Haji Saltinsky

Uzun-Haji was a Naqshbandi sheikh from Dagestan who opposed Russian rule in the North Caucasus and spent years in exile and prison. In September 1919, during the Russian Civil War, he proclaimed the North Caucasian Emirate in the mountains of Chechnya and Dagestan, with himself as emir, and fought Denikin's White forces, at times alongside the Bolsheviks. He died in March 1920, and his emirate collapsed as the Red Army arrived.
