V-weapons

1944–1945 · 20th century · Also known as Vergeltungswaffen, Vengeance weapons

The V-weapons were long-range weapons used by Nazi Germany in the last year of the Second World War: the V-1 flying bomb and the V-2 ballistic missile, the first of its kind. From June 1944 they were launched against London and, after its liberation, against the port of Antwerp, a main target in the winter of 1944–45. They killed thousands of civilians but could not change the course of the war.
