Uzziah

8th century BCE · 8th century BCE

Uzziah, also called Azariah, was king of Judah for much of the 8th century BCE. The Bible credits him with defeating the Philistines, rebuilding Elath on the Red Sea, fortifying Jerusalem and reorganising the army, and archaeology shows a time of growing settlement and prosperity. He was struck by leprosy late in life, and his son Jotham governed as regent.
