Vasily of Kostroma

1241–1276 · 13th century

Vasily of Kostroma was the youngest son of Grand Prince Yaroslav II of Vladimir and the first prince of Kostroma, which he received as his appanage after his father's death in 1246. He fought the Lithuanians and the Novgorodians, and in 1272 became grand prince of Vladimir with the approval of the Golden Horde, ruling from Kostroma rather than Vladimir. He also held Novgorod, and died in 1276.
