Viet Cong

1960–1977 · 20th century · Also known as National Liberation Front for South Vietnam, National Front for the Liberation of South Vietnam

The Viet Cong, formally the National Liberation Front for South Vietnam, was the communist-led political and military organisation founded in 1960 to overthrow the government of the Republic of Vietnam. Backed by North Vietnam, it waged guerrilla war throughout the Vietnam War and launched the Tet Offensive in 1968. In 1969 it formed the Provisional Revolutionary Government, which nominally ruled the south after Saigon fell in 1975.
