Vincent van Gogh

1853–1890 · 19th century · Also known as Van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter whose expressive colour and brushwork made him one of the most influential artists of modern times. He painted most of his works, among them The Potato Eaters, Sunflowers and The Starry Night, in about a decade, much of it in France. Little recognised in his lifetime and troubled by mental illness, he died in 1890 at Auvers-sur-Oise.
