War of the Confederation

1836–1839 · 19th century

The War of the Confederation was fought from 1836 to 1839 by Chile, with Peruvian exiles and Argentine support, against the Peru–Bolivian Confederation created by the Bolivian president Andrés de Santa Cruz. After a failed first Chilean expedition, the Chilean general Manuel Bulnes defeated Santa Cruz at Yungay in January 1839. The confederation was dissolved and Peru and Bolivia separated again.
